Innovation in cryoablation of recurrent pelvic chondrosarcoma, thanks to a customized 3D-printed support

A new challenging case: fourth relapse of chondrosarcoma with non-surgical pelvic recurrence, indicated for treatment by cryoablation.

The main challenge

Ensuring that the "ice ball" completely covers the lesion without damaging critical structures was intensified in this case by:

Anatomical complexity: the pelvic location (left pubis) meant proximity to critical nerves (peroneal, sciatic) and urogenital structures (bladder, prostate).

CT visualization limitations: the lesion was not fully visible on conventional CT, requiring advanced 3D multimodal planning fusing MRI and CT to obtain accurate segmentation of the patient's anatomy.

The latest technology in 3D scanning to virtualize objects

A customized support-positioner (PSM Class I) was designed using PLA using high-volume FDM 3D printing, conforming to the patient's surface anatomy.

The therapeutic position of the pelvic girdle and lower limbs was reproduced in all three stages of the process: simulation, MR image acquisition, and intervention, achieving full concordance.

Dynamic control of cryoprobe coverage, reducing the risk of recurrence or damage due to overextension to highly critical anatomical structures (nerves/adjacent organs).

This case demonstrates how collaboration between the University Hospital with Integrated Biomedical Engineering (innovation applied to real-life cases) and technology companies such as 3D CREACIONES can drive significant advances in medical care.
